An Indiana mother has given birth to what is believed to be one of the biggest babies ever born in the state.
Waylon Cole Hallett was born via C-section in Seymour at Schneck Medical Center on May 1, 2017 weighing 16 pounds and 24.5 inches long and much bigger than his family expected.
After his birth he spent seven weeks in the NICU for breathing and feeding issues, but he is now back at home.
At her 37-week ultrasound, medics told Waylon’s mum he was likely to be around 11 pounds, 11 ounces.
“At seven-weeks-old, he weighs 17 pounds, 7 ounces,” says Edmond. “He sleeps a lot more than our other babies did, but he’s healthy. When he’s awake, he’s alert and smiles. He’s a happy boy.”
“The doctors and nurses were like, ‘Oh my god!’ proud dad, Edmond Hallett said. “We ended up weighing him three times because no one could believe he actually weighed 16 pounds. At first I thought maybe the scale was broken.”
Edmond reports that 28-year-old Whitney has gestational diabetes, a condition that can make a baby grow quite large in the womb. Her other children weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces, and 11 pounds, 1 ounce, and 9 pounds, 14 ounces, respectively.
According to the American Pregnancy Organization, the average newborn weighs seven-and-a-half pounds at birth. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest birth ever was an Ohio baby born at 22 pounds in 1879.
