What if your staple food turned out to be fake? What if we tell you that the rice that you are consuming is fake; made of plastic! This fake rice is made in China and being sold in our country.
Origin of plastic rice scare
Consider the following chronology of events
– In 2010, There were a few cases of adulteration reported in several South Asian countries that imported rice from China. In these cases, superior ‘Wuchang’ rice was mixed with inferior quality rice treated with synthetic resin to make it look like ‘Wuchang’ rice. A couple of news media picked up the synthetic resin part and replaced it with word plastic.
– In 2011, a Chinese Restaurant Association official issued a statement that eating three bowls of adulterated rice was akin to eating a plastic bag.
– Then, there were several videos on various blogs showing hard balls made of plastic rice.
As for the first one, it is a fact that adulteration did happen, and happens even now in all food groups, including rice. As for the second, it was more of an individual’s opinion (not supported by any scientific data – was it one bag or half or two, what size bag 😋). The 3rd one is true but to any variety of rice, not only plastic. You can repeat this experiment at home with any variety of rice with a 100% success rate every time.
How is plastic rice made?
The fake rice is made by mixing a small amount of real Wuchang rice with potatoes, sweet potatoes and plastic. The potatoes are first formed into the shape of rice grains. Industrial synthetic resins are then added to the mix and then sprayed with a fragrance to replicate the original rice smell. The rice reportedly stays hard even after being cooked.
Is plastic rice for real?
Well, we do not know for sure. All we know is that there is no authentic, established source that details a case where 100% of plastic rice was passed as normal rice. We do believe, however, if it will make sense for adulterators to trade in plastic rice and if there is a chance that they could go undetected while doing so, they will try it.
Health risks
There is a major health concern regarding the high level of food adulteration. The wholesale traders of rice, pulses and fruits will be raided and samples will be collected to tested for adulteration. This is high time that such measures should be taken.
The fake rice being imported cant be differentiated from the real rice. Considering this, it is a huge concern of health and well being of common man.
As you would expect, consuming this “plastic rice” is extremely harmful and toxic to one’s health, and is causing quite an uproar.
