We already know that our planet is full of weird and often unsettling animals. We’ve seen enough David Attenborough documentaries to come to terms with that. But even Attenborough can’t show us ALL of the animals. Which is why we’re here today, to introduce you to some of the more, uh, unusual animals. From a fish who loves make-up to a vegetarian piranha, let’s meet Shocking Creatures That Are Not From This Planet!
Star Nosed Mole
A star-nosed mole is surely one of the world’s weirdest-looking animals. If you were to come face to face with one, you might think its head had been replaced by a tiny octopus.
And for an animal that’s nearly blind, the American species is astonishingly speedy: The world’s fastest eater, it can find and gobble down an insect or worm in a quarter of a second.
Also known as the Galapagos batfish, the red-lipped batfish is a strange and surprising fish found off the coast of the Galapagos Islands and Peru.
With their bright red mouths, strange ‘nose’ and unusual behaviors, it’s hard to miss one of these sea creatures.
Axolotls are cute, charismatic salamanders that have an almost otherworldly ability to regenerate their body parts. But pollution and urbanization critically threaten this species’ survival.
With its doll eyes and fuzzy mouthparts, the Australian peacock spider could endear itself to even the most skittish arachnophobe. Only one-fifth of an inch long, this wee wonder is found in a broad range of habitats Down Under, from coastal sand dunes to suburban gardens. It is most noted for the male’s lurid abdominal fan. (Until recently, scientists believed the surrounding flaps enabled the spider to fly.) Its brilliant markings, much like the peacock’s plumage, are flaunted in an elaborate courtship dance for the benefit of the dun-colored female. Males are notably persistent, making moves on females who are aloof, pregnant, or of another species entirely.
If the animal Kingdom ever had a competition to crown its own superhero, with its supernatural freaky powers, the cute and colorful Mantis shrimp would be the outstanding favorite to claim the title. This humble crustacean packs an amazing array of unusual talents and abilities in its armored body. From a vision so advanced it is unlike anything in the animal kingdom to supersonic strikes, this shrimp packs one hell of a punch
